The St Kilda Rd Bluestone is such a classic reminder of Melbourne’s humble beginnings during the Gold Rush and a site that is treasure by the Deaf and wider Community.
The 1866 Gothic Bluestone was built by the founder, F.J. Rose, who was a pioneering deaf educator, mentor and advocate who worked tirelessly throughout his life to improve deaf education in Victoria. His legacy continues to inspire and guide the work today.

Once you are in front of the building, pass through the gate and follow the sings towards the Tradeblock cafe. Once you have arrived in front of Tradeblock - feel free to get a coffee or a snack then turn around and you will see the company sign. Please ring the doorbell and wait.

You will see the deep and rich history of the building, with objects, schoolwork and photos dating back to the 1860s. You will learn the stories of those who boarded at the school and much more! Some features include the Grand Staircase with the magnificent Ferguson and Urie stained glass window, the Basement that has the original Well and the Boys bath, the tower and the view of the 6 Acre property on St Kilda Road, and the History room that showcases original Artefacts form the 1800’s used by the students.
