Three self-guided mystery games in downtown Salem and along its waterfront, played entirely on your phone. Salem got rich on the sea trade and is remembered for 1692, and both stories are still written on its streets, on the statues, tablets and memorials you pass without reading. Every stop is out in public and free to reach, so you have to be there to solve it.
Choose the game that fits your group: a short loop for families with children, a longer walk following Nathaniel Hawthorne through the town he could not leave, or the Deep Dive, which follows an accusation through the streets of 1692 and ends a mile west of downtown.
No guide, no reservation, no admission, no set start time. One purchase covers your whole group, however many of you there are.
Start at the bandstand in the middle of Salem Common and open your game link there; it gives you the exact first stop. Two of the three games begin on the Common. The intermediate game begins a few minutes away, at Essex Street and Washington Square West, outside the Hawthorne Hotel.
The two downtown games finish near the waterfront, by the Custom House and Derby Wharf. The Deep Dive finishes about a mile west of downtown, at the memorial on Pope Street, which is best reached by car or rideshare.
Where two of the three games begin, at the bandstand. Open and free at all hours.
At the west side of the Common, beside the Witch Museum. Solve the stop before moving on.
On Hawthorne Boulevard. A clue is solved here in two of the games.
The waterfront, from the grounds and the head of the wharf. Free, outdoors.
East India Marine Hall, the museum's historic hall on the Essex Street pedestrian mall. Seen from outside; no museum entry needed.
Beside the old burying ground off Charter Street. Three stops of the Deep Dive are here. Open dawn to dusk.
On Essex Street, solved from the sidewalk. No entry needed.
The Deep Dive's final stop, about a mile west on Pope Street. No parking at the memorial; the Gallows Hill Park lot is nearby.
