1Dinokeng Game Reserve
The Dinokeng Game Reserve is Gauteng's premier Big Five game reserve and the only free-roaming Big Five reserve in the province. Located about an hour's drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, it offers visitors an authentic African safari experience without having to travel to South Africa's larger national parks. The name "Dinokeng" means "a place of rivers" in Setswana, reflecting the region's natural beauty and diverse ecosystems. The reserve spans over 21,000 hectares of bushveld and is home to the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros, and buffalo—as well as giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, crocodiles, hyenas, antelope, and more than 300 bird species. Visitors can enjoy guided game drives, self-drive safaris, bush walks, birdwatching, and luxury lodge experiences while learning about wildlife conservation and the importance of protecting South Africa's natural heritage.
