This tour is guided by a local, a professional architectural photographer, historian and author of "Hidden Edinburgh - A Walk Through Medieval History", and features both well-known and the more hidden features of Edinburgh's Old Town.

Whist basic digital camera knowledge while shooting in Manual mode is assumed, advice is given on photographic best-practice and where the best places to shoot will be. In addition, signed copies of the book are available at a discounted price to tour participants.

We meet at the Netherbow Wellhead, which is outside the John Knox House museum in the High Street.

End point

This tour ends beside the Queen Mary's Bath House at Holyrood, at the foot of the Royal Mile.

    The Netherbow

    We'll visit the site of the Netherbow Port Gate hear about its strategic importance for the city.

    Your guide will show you the location of one of two remaining locations above ground of the Kings Wall, built by James II in 1450 to defend against the English.

    Your guide will show you a great spot to photograph the Canongate Tolbooth, with its impressive medieval architecture, and will tell you all about the history of the Canongate Tolbooth.

    Canongate Kirk

    The tour will go past Canongate Kirk, enabling you to shoot a lovely photo of this historic church. Your guide will also tell you about the history and importance of this church and its Royal connections.

    Dunbars Close Garden

    You'll visit the site of one of the gardens in Canongate, recreated as a medieval garden would have been, and hear about the living conditions there in the Middle Ages.

    You'll visit the site where the staging post to London was located, and see the medieval-style buildings there. One of the hidden treasures of the Royal Mile!

    We walk along in front of the palace to visit Queen Mary's Bath House, where you guide will show you the best place to take a great photo of this quirky little building, and you'll hear about its mysterious involvement in a medieval murder. This is where we'll end our tour.
