  St. Peter's Basilica

Travelers will step inside St. Peter's Basilica, the largest church in the world and the heart of Catholic Christianity, built over the traditional burial site of St. Peter. Inside, they'll see Michelangelo's Pietà, carved when he was just 23, and Bernini's towering bronze canopy (the Baldacchino) rising above the papal altar beneath Michelangelo's soaring dome. They can also view Bernini's glowing Cathedra Petri and the bronze statue of St. Peter, whose foot has been worn smooth by centuries of pilgrims' touches. The guide will share the stories behind the basilica's construction, the artists who shaped it, and the symbolism of its art. Before or after going inside, travelers can take in the grand sweep of St. Peter's Square and Bernini's colonnades, which are designed to look like open arms welcoming visitors.
