The High Atlas crossing on the N9 road, at over 2,000 m, with switchbacks, red-rock slopes and views over the valleys. It's a stop for photos and a tea break, not a visit. The road is winding, which matters for travelers prone to car sickness.
A fortified village (ksar) of earthen buildings, UNESCO-listed, stacked up a hillside above a river. It has appeared in many films and TV shows, so it's the best-known stop on the route. You cross the riverbed, climb through the alleys, and reach the granary at the top for the view. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours.
After Ouarzazate the road crosses a small pass, then drops into the Draa Valley, the long river valley of palm groves, villages and kasbahs running toward the desert. It's a drive rather than a stop, but the landscape change is the point of the day.
Agdz is a small oasis town below the Jbel Kissane massif. Tamnougalt is a well-preserved kasbah village nearby, with narrow covered alleys. It's a good quiet stop if you are not rushed.
A camel ride into the dunes at sunset, then dinner, music and a night in a camp. In the Zagora area the dunes are small, so describe this as an "authentic desert experience" and not a big-dune Sahara one.
The main town between the Atlas and the desert, often called the "door of the desert". Taourirt Kasbah: another Glaoui residence, with preserved rooms and a typical Moroccan palace layout. Atlas Studios: a film studio with sets from international productions, visited as a short guided tour.
