Savannah's coastal areas are known for having the largest lighthouse in Georgia, as well as the state's smallest lighthouse. Cockspur Island is home to the Cockspur Island Lighthouse and Fort Pulaski, one of Savannah's historic battlements.
Since the mid-1700s, newly arrived African American communities established dwellings in these coastal areas, and in 1827, Cockspur Island was chosen as the site for the new battlement. As Savannah's growing port required more fortifications, ground was broken near the mouth of the river to add a more substantial defense. Since that day, Fort Pulaski and Cockspur Island have been a resolute part of Savannah's and the nation's history.
