Even in Kyoto—a major hub for traditional Japanese music—"Sogu" is one of the very few places where koto workshops are held on a regular basis. A distinctive feature of "Sogu" is the opportunity to touch the koto's thirteen strings and actually play the instrument under the guidance of top-tier instructors.

It is located in central Kyoto, about a three-minute walk west from Kyoto City Hall along Oike-dori Street. It is on the third floor of a building that has a seal shop on the ground floor.

What to expect

Learn about the history and characteristics of Japanese musical instruments
・I will explain in what situations Japanese instruments such as koto have been performed
・I will explain the characteristics of the koto as an instrument

I will explain the characteristics of Japanese music
・I will explain the characteristics of Japanese music compared to Western music expressed in five-line notation with materials
・Please feel the fluctuation, blurring, rhythm, and spacing of the sound unique to Japanese music up close to the performer

Have them actually play an instrument
・Put on playing claws, touch the strings of the koto, correct your posture, and have them play the koto

After touching the instrument, please listen to the Japanese music performance again
・Please enjoy playing Japanese music after learning about the changes and characteristics of Japanese music and the mechanism of musical instruments
・The lecturers are all top teachers

We will issue a certificate that you have experienced the piano in “Encounter”
・Please bring back the certificate and keep it in a safe place so that you can always remember the wonderful experience of playing the koto
