About 1 hour and 30 minutes south of Quito, along the Pan-American Highway, crossing part of the Andean mountain range and the town of Machachi, we will reach a scenic area known for its cattle ranching and agricultural activity. Surrounded by the Pasochoa and Rumiñahui volcanoes on the right, Cerro Corazón on the left, and with the majestic Ilinizas volcanoes on the horizon, this region offers spectacular Andean landscapes. Here, we will make our first technical stop at an altitude of 2,945 meters (9,662 ft) to allow for acclimatization, enjoy breakfast, and take photos.
On our way to Cotopaxi National Park, we will travel along the legendary Avenue of the Volcanoes, one of the most scenic routes in the Andes. Once inside the national park, you will have the opportunity to purchase handmade crafts created by local indigenous communities. As we approach the volcano, we will make several acclimatization stops to ensure your comfort at high altitude. We will arrive at the parking area and begin a hike to the refuge, continuing up to 5,000 meters (16,404 ft), where you will reach the Cotopaxi glacier. After this unforgettable high-altitude experience, we will return to the refuge to enjoy a picnic-style lunch. Then, we will head back to the parking area for a short informative briefing before starting an exciting downhill mountain bike ride to Limpiopungo Lagoon. At the lagoon, you will enjoy a guided walk around this stunning high-Andean lake, followed by a visit to the museum and interpretation center, where you can learn more about Cotopaxi’s unique ecosystem and geology.
After the activity, we will start our return journey to Quito, arriving in the afternoon.
