Japanese Sword Polishing Experience in Fukuoka

2 hours (approximately)
Offered in: English

What makes this experience special is that you don’t simply watch a demonstration—you experience Japanese sword polishing yourself under the guidance of a professional sword polisher.

Japanese swords are works of art, and knowing what to look for allows you to appreciate their beauty in a completely different way. Through hands-on polishing, you will discover how the shape, hamon, surface, and other subtle features of a blade are revealed.

You will also experience the unique posture, traditional tools, and delicate movements of a sword polisher. Even polishing a small section gives you a sense of the patience, precision, and skill behind this traditional craft.

This is a rare opportunity to step into an authentic workshop, learn directly from a craftsman, and experience a side of Japanese culture that most visitors never see. After the experience, you may find yourself looking at Japanese swords with a new perspective.

No previous knowledge is required—just bring your curiosity.

What to expect

Your experience begins at our Japanese sword polishing workshop, where you will learn about Japanese swords and the traditional work of a sword polisher. The sword polisher will introduce the basic principles of polishing and explain how the process brings out the beauty and character of each blade.

You will then experience Japanese sword polishing for yourself. After a demonstration, you will use traditional polishing tools and try polishing a section of a real Japanese sword under professional guidance. You will learn the basic posture, how to hold and use the tools, and the careful movements required for this traditional craft.

During the experience, the sword polisher will also explain how polishing reveals features of a Japanese sword, such as its shape, hamon (temper line), and surface characteristics. You will learn what to look for when appreciating a Japanese sword.

The experience is not about sharpening a sword for cutting. Instead, it focuses on the traditional art of Japanese sword polishing and the techniques used to reveal the beauty of the blade.

For safety reasons, the sword used in the hands-on experience is not sharpened and cannot be used for cutting.
