Your evening begins at Chongqing 1949 Grand Theater, a purpose-built venue in the heart of the city. Exchange your ticket at the counter and find your seat — this is no ordinary theater show. From the first scene, the stage is in constant motion. Rotating platforms carry you through time as wartime streets rebuild into the events of 1949. Hundreds of performers — soldiers, merchants, dancers and revolutionaries — surround you as sets transform and scenes unfold on every side. Lighting, sound and music build the atmosphere — rain on the river, footsteps in the streets, the roar of a city finding its future. Performed in Chinese, the show needs no translation: spectacle, movement and emotion carry the story. In roughly 75 minutes, experience one of China's most ambitious productions, honoring the courage of Chongqing and its people. After the final scene, you're free to explore the city — the theater sits near the heart of Chongqing, an easy taxi or metro ride from most hotels.
