Escape Dushanbe for a full-day private trip to Iskanderkul, a turquoise alpine lake at about 2,200 m in the Fann Mountains, named after Alexander the Great.
Your English- or Russian-speaking guide and a professional driver pick you up from your hotel and take you north through the green Varzob Gorge and along a winding mountain highway, with a photo stop at a panoramic viewpoint before the Anzob Tunnel.
At the lake you have about 4 hours to explore: walk the shoreline, see the 40-meter waterfall known as the "Niagara of the Fann Mountains," visit Snake Lake, the Five Springs and the Cave of Bucephalus, linked to legends of Alexander's famous horse. Lunch is available at a lakeside cafe (at your own cost).
Because the tour is private, you set the pace and can stop for photos along the way. Ideal for nature lovers and photographers who want to see Tajikistan's mountains in one day without arranging transport.
Pickup starts at 8:45 AM from your hotel or any address in Dushanbe, with departure at 9:00 AM. Please share your hotel name or pickup address when booking; we will confirm the exact pickup time the day before the tour. Travelers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
At 9:00 AM you leave Dushanbe and drive north through the green Varzob Gorge, following the Varzob River for about 70 km towards the Anzob Pass. Enjoy the views of the river, rocky slopes and small mountain villages from the car as the road gradually climbs into the mountains.
As the road climbs higher, the green valley gives way to bare peaks and snowfields. Before entering the Anzob Tunnel (about 5 km long and one of the highest road tunnels in Central Asia), you stop at a mountain viewpoint for photos of the high Gissar range. Stretch your legs, breathe the fresh mountain air and capture the dramatic serpentine road below.
After about 3 hours on the road you reach Iskanderkul, a turquoise lake at about 2,200 m surrounded by the rocky peaks of the Fann Mountains. Legend says it was named after Alexander the Great, and that his beloved horse Bucephalus rests in its depths. You have time to walk along the shore, take photos of the lake changing colour with the light, and explore the sights nearby with your guide: - Snake Lake (Zmeinoe) - a small, quiet emerald lake just a short walk away, named after the harmless water snakes that live there - Five Springs - clear cold springs bubbling out of the mountainside - Cave of Bucephalus - a rock cave linked to local legends about Alexander's horse There is also time for a relaxed lunch at a local cafe by the lake (at your own cost). The lake entrance fee is included.
Enjoy a short hike to the beautiful 40-meter-high waterfall known locally as the “Niagara of the Fann Mountains,” located approximately 1 km from Iskanderkul Lake. The walk takes around 20 minutes each way at a moderate pace, with a 15-minute stop at the waterfall to take photos and enjoy the spectacular scenery. This stunning waterfall is considered the heart of the Iskanderkul Lake area and is one of its most memorable natural attractions.
