  The Voortrekker Monument

  Our next stop is the Voortrekker Monument. This monument is of great significance to many Afrikaans-speaking South Africans because it stands for Afrikaner Nationalism. The interior walls depict the story of the Great Trek, a mass movement of Afrikaner Boers who resented British rule in the Cape and traveled to the interior of the country. It is the Biggest Monument in Africa. Specifically important to the overall understanding of Boer culture in South Africa in the 1800’s. Built to honour those who left the Cape Colony under British control in pursuit of self determination. Subsequently left the Cape colony between 1835 and 1855 and became known as Voortrekkers. This is a massive 40 metre high granite structure built on a hill top and can be seen from most parts of Pretoria. See tha Laager wall of 64 wagons circles the Voortrekker monument. While being the same number of wagons used in battle of Blood River. A very significant battle in South Africa’s past.

  Ditsong Kruger Museum

  Paul Kruger Museum: Visit this interesting House Museum. Learn more about the former president of South Africa and view a display of furniture and personal items that belonged to the Kruger family. Kruger House Museum: Built in 1884 and was the first house in Pretoria to be lit by electricity. Kruger’s personal House. Immaculately recreated to look exactly as it did when Paul Kruger, president of the Zuid Afrikaanse (Transvaal) Republiek, lived there more than a century ago. On view is also the Presidential coach – luxury train wagon. Explore exhibits where international admiration of Paul Kruger is displayed. Across the road is the Gereformeerde Kerk (Church). Paul Kruger’s Pretoria Church.

  Drive through the Historic Pretoria city centre with statue of Paul Kruger. While surrounded by four Boer soldiers. Dating back to 1850’s. With buildings surrounding the square of significant historical value and includes the Old Raadsaal. Seat of the Boer government – ZAR (South African Republic). Additionally Palace of Justice, which served as a venue for the Rivonia trial after the raid on the Liliesleaf Farm. Former President Nelson Mandela being one of the accused.

  This was Designed by Sir Herbert Baker, opened in 1910. The blue train a luxury train that connects Victoria Falls, Pretoria and Cape Town departs from here.

  See this house where The Vereeniging Peace Treaty that officially ended the 2nd Boer War was signed in this house in 1902

• South African Reserve Bank (Pass by)

  Drive past Pretoria’s tallest building Pretoria build in 1988. A 38 story tower (150m tall). The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) is the central bank of South Africa. It was established in 1921, through the promulgation of the Currency and Bank Act of 10 August 1920. It was created as a direct result of the abnormal monetary and financial conditions which World War I had brought.

  Union Buildings

  We then visit the Union Buildings which are the seat of the national government. You’ll have a chance to stroll through the beautiful terraced gardens and enjoy a spectacular view of the city. This is a National monument and office of the president of South Africa. Designed by Sir Herbert Baker and built between 1910 and 1913 by over 1260 workers built in Sandstone. Stunning terraced gardens. Planted with indigenous plants, while having a panoramic view of Pretoria from the top of the hill. Consequently has been the site of many important events related to the freedom struggle. One being in 1956, when 20 000 women, protesting against apartheid laws, marched to Pretoria to hand over a memorandum. Additionally the Union Buildings were a site of many protests. Furthermore, later serving as a venue for many historical events in South Africa such as the inauguration of South Africa’s first democratically elected President, Nelson Mandela.

  The Memorial is a Tribute to South African troops who died during the First World War. Situated on the highest point of old Pretoria, giving an excellent view over the city.
