It is a national AAAAA-level tourist attraction and a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level. The site boasts a 6,000-year history of hot spring utilization and a 3,000-year history as an imperial palace retreat. In the 6th year of the Tianbao reign of the Tang Dynasty (747 AD), Emperor Xuanzong of Tang carried out large-scale expansion and named it Huaqing Palace. Popularly known as Huaqing Pool for its numerous hot spring bathing pools, it served as the Tang imperial summer resort and bathing palace. Emperor Xuanzong and Yang Guifei resided here for long periods. The famous line from *Song of Everlasting Sorrow* by Bai Juyi — "When spring brings chill, she is granted a bath at Huaqing Pool; the smooth hot spring water washes her creamy skin" — depicts this very place.

    Drum Tower Square

Completed in 1998 and covering an area of 2.18 hectares, this square is known as Xi’an’s “City Living Room”. It is an urban project combining old city renovation and cultural heritage conservation. Historically, this site was where the government office of the Ministry of Secretaries stood in the Tang Dynasty. After demolishing the old buildings between the Bell Tower and Drum Tower, the two towers now face each other from east to west, recreating the ancient spatial layout of “morning bell and evening drum”. The square comprises a ground green plaza, sunken square and underground commercial street, equipped with a musical fountain. It serves as a leisure spot for locals in the daytime and glimmers with splendid lights at night, making it the ideal location to photograph the night views of the Bell and Drum Towers. The Muslim Quarter is within walking distance to the west, enjoying an extremely central location.

Dating back to the Tang Dynasty, the opening of the Silk Road brought numerous Arab and Persian merchants to settle in Chang’an, forming the early foreign settlement known as Fanfang. It evolved through the Song and Yuan dynasties, and by the Ming and Qing dynasties, a well-established Hui residential layout of “Seven Mosques and Thirteen Neighbourhoods” took shape, with a history of more than a thousand years. During the Qing Dynasty, Beiyuanmen housed the office of the Shaanxi Governor. In the 1990s, it was renovated into an antique-style tourist food street and has become Xi’an’s iconic block of folk culture.
