The Akechidaira Ropeway is located on the way to Lake Chuzenji, so if you plan to visit both the lake and the ropeway, it’s best to go to the ropeway first. If you visit the lake first, you’ll end up passing the same road again to reach the ropeway, and then repeat the route once more on your way back—basically traveling the same road twice. The ropeway takes you to a high viewpoint where you can enjoy mesmerizing scenery. During certain seasons, the view becomes even more beautiful, making it totally worth the ride. Another tip: Parking is free if you take the ropeway. If you don’t ride it, then parking becomes chargeable.
After Nikko, we set off to Lake Chuzenji - which was lovely, but the more interesting sight was all of the Cherry Blossom that we saw. Being more north and so high up in the mountains, the last of the blossoms were still in bloom.
Kegon Falls, located in Nikkō National Park, Tochigi, is one of Japan’s most beautiful waterfalls. Fed by Lake Chūzenji, the water plunges 97 meters down a massive cliff, creating a breathtaking scene surrounded by mountains and forests
The river water is remarkably clear and beautiful. Nearby, you'll also find a bronze statue of Itagaki Taisuke (板垣退助) , a prominent politician of the Meiji era and a leading figure in Japan's Freedom and People's Rights Movement, adding a touch of historical significance to the area.I hope to visit again someday and see the river reflecting the vibrant colors of the autumn maple leaves. It must be a truly breathtaking sight during the fall season.
This is the mausoleum of 德川家康 and is place to many important cultural treasures recognized as part of a heritage site. An admission ticket is required to enter. I recommend purchasing the combined ticket at Nikko Station in advance (it costs 1,600 yen per person and includes entry to both 東照宮 and 藥師堂). Visiting 東照宮 involves climbing quite a few stairs, but the architecture is absolutely stunning and filled with intricate details. I highly recommend reading about its history and symbolism beforehand, as it will help you appreciate the buildings much more. The entire site is rich in stories, craftsmanship, and cultural significance.Audio guides are available for rent, which can enhance the experience. Be aware that shoes must be removed in certain areas, and photography is prohibited in some sections.
Nikko is an amazing complex of temples and gardens with world heritage sites in abundance. And yet, as is often the case in Japan (maybe everywhere), it is the frequently ignored details that steal the show, like a moss covered lantern, a pond almost hidden, or even detailed ornamentation on the wall of a seldom notice "out-building". So, while Rinnoji is an incredible temple, worthy of a slow, thoughtful visit, don't miss the beauty in the details
