    Pozzo De San Patrizio

    The Well of Saint Patrick is a masterpiece of Renaissance engineering located in Orvieto, Umbria. It was designed in 1527 by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger on commission from Pope Clement VII. The pope, who took refuge in Orvieto after the Sack of Rome, wanted this imposing structure to guarantee the city's water supply in case of a prolonged siege. Entry is recommended at the end of the tour.
