This is the Slave Route walked with people who belong to it, not read off a panel. Your guide is from Ouidah's Vodun world and has led heritage groups here for over ten years: you enter the Kpasse sacred forest and the Temple of Pythons with someone the priests know, and you walk the four kilometres to the Door of No Return in the order the deported actually walked it - auction square, Portuguese fort (now the MIME museum), Tree of Forgetting, Tree of Return, the shore. Private vehicle from your Cotonou hotel, no group to wait for, time at each station to listen rather than photograph.
