St Andrews On The Rocks Seaweed Experience

4 hours (approximately)
Offered in: English

This is the only time of the month you can walk out onto parts of the Fife shore that are usually underwater. On the Rocks runs only on the big spring tides of the full and new moon. With your helmet on, you forage the deepest pools with Jayson, a seaweed specialist with longstanding professional experience who has been called a world expert. Then you eat what you gathered: a five-course tasting menu cooked over open fire on the beach. It's a genuine sea-to-fork day, rated 5.0 from 34 reviews on Tripadvisor.

End point
This activity ends back at the meeting point.

What to expect

On the Rocks is our flagship marine foraging experience, scheduled around the big spring tides that come with the full and new moons. These tides only happen a few times a month and uncover the deepest parts of the East Neuk intertidal, usually completely underwater.

We meet, get our safety briefing and helmets, then walk out with the falling tide (around 800 m over mixed sand and rock). For about 90 minutes Jayson guides you across the low shore, showing you what grows on the newly uncovered rocks and in the deep pools: sea spaghetti, sea lettuce, dulse and sugar kelp. You learn how to identify each one, how to cut it so it regrows, and its role in the ecosystem.

Then the fire goes on. Over the next hour and a half a five-course wild tasting menu is cooked over an open flame using the day's harvest, and eaten together on the beach with questions, stories and seconds. As the tide turns we walk back. Times move with the tide on the day.
