Vanilla Braiding Workshop With Local Artisans

1 hour 30 minutes (approximately)
Offered in: English and 1 more

Learn about Madagascar vanilla directly from a team involved in growing and preparing the beans. The plantation presentation introduces you to vanilla varieties, aromas, and quality grades, helping you understand what to look for when choosing vanilla.

Then work alongside a Malagasy artisan to compose your own creation from vanilla beans. Take home your handmade vanilla souvenir and the vanilla caviar you collect during the workshop, ready to use in your kitchen. This experience brings together a grower’s knowledge, an artisan’s skills, and something you have made yourself.

What to expect

Join us at L’Atelier de Madagascar in Andraharo, Antananarivo, for a 90-minute vanilla experience combining a presentation and a practical workshop with a Malagasy artisan.

Begin with a welcome drink and a 30-minute introduction to vanilla and our plantation in Madagascar. Learn how vanilla grows, how flowers are pollinated by hand, and how green beans develop their dark colour and aroma through curing and drying. Compare vanilla varieties, aromas, and quality grades, and learn their uses in cooking and baking.

Next, watch your artisan demonstrate the preparation of the beans and the basics of vanilla braiding. Follow her guidance as you compose your own pineapple-shaped creation using vanilla beans. During the practical session, remove and collect the seeds inside the beans, known as vanilla caviar.

Your artisan supports you throughout the workshop. No previous experience is needed, and all beans, tools, and materials are provided.

Take home your vanilla creation and the caviar you collected to use in your own recipes.
