Just north of Kathmandu are two lovely sites where one may experience Tamang and Sherpa life, temperate forest and alpine pastures, glaciers, lakes and snowy peaks. Helambu valley, noted for its scenic grandeur and pleasant climate is just north of the Kathmandu Valley. One can stay in highland monastery villages and small settlements in pristine forests. Above Helambu is a mountain pass that opens to the lake of Gosainkunda to the valley of Langtang.

Itinerary

Duration: 9 days (approximately)
    Day 1

    Drive to Sundarijal (1460m) and trek to Chisopani (2215m)

    After early morning breakfast; you will drive to Sundarijal (16 k.m/40 minutes drive); and enjoy 1st day walking by ascending to Shivapuri National park and Mulkharka,(1900m), a Tamang community village. You will then walk to uphill through oak forest and reach at a small pass, Borlang Bhanjyang (2420m) and then descend to Chisopani (2215m).

  • Day 2

    Trek to Kutumsang (2470m)

    Walk down to Patibhanjyang (1770m), then gradually ascend to Chipling (2170m), a small Tamang village and to Manjyu Danda (2455m). From here you will descend to a village of Golphu Bhanjyang (2130m), and take a final ascent to Kutumsang (2470m), a nice settlement of Sherpa community.

    Trek to Mangengoth (3390m)

    Today you will ascend following the ridge and through the oak and rhododendron forest; then you will reach to Mangengoth, surrounded by rhododendron forest.

    Trek to Ghopte (3530m)

    You will climb up following the north ridge-line and through the rhododendron forest until you reach at Tharepati (3510m). From here you will gradually descend following some rocky trails and pine forest; and after a short ascent you will reach at Ghopte.

    Trek to Phedi (3630m)

    Today you will walk following the trail with many turns and bends, and with mixture of gradual up and down hill. You will eventually reach at Phedi at ease.

    Trek to Gosainkunda (4380m) via Lauribinayak Pass (4610m)

    As usual you will set off your trek after breakfast. You will follow up the rough trail by passing a chorten and ascend to Lauribinayak Pass in 4 hours. From here you will enjoy the spectacular view of snowy-capped mountain ranges of Mt. Langtang, Ganesh Himal and Mt. Annapurna. Then you will descend to Gosaikunda, the sacred crystal lake.

    Trek to Sing Gompa (3150m)

    With short ascend, and then descend following the south ridge with a view of another sacred lake of Bhairav Kunda, beneath the trail on your left you will continue descend walk to Sing Gompa.

    Trek to Dhunche (2030m)

    You will trek down to Trishuli river through impressive forest; and cross a bridge to the south bank of the river and continue descending until you reach at Dhunche.

    Return to Kathmandu (1350m) - 5/6 hours drive
