    Verde River

The Verde River, one of Arizona’s few free-flowing rivers, originates in the highlands near Paulden, fed by Big Chino Wash and other springs. It flows southeast for about 170 miles through central Arizona, carving through rugged canyons and lush riparian zones before reaching the Verde Valley. In the Verde Valley, in Cottonwood and Camp Verde, the river creates a fertile oasis, supporting diverse ecosystems with cottonwood, willow, and mesquite forests, and wildlife like otters, beavers, and bald eagles. Its clear, spring-fed waters sustain agriculture, recreation (kayaking, fishing), and cultural sites tied to the Sinagua people, such as Tuzigoot National Monument. The river’s flow slows in the valley, meandering through scenic landscapes before continuing toward its confluence with the Salt River. Designated a Wild and Scenic River in parts, it’s a vital lifeline in Arizona’s arid landscape.
