Departure Point: Miss Manon * Address: 87 Rue Saint-Antoine, 75004 Paris, France Directions: Meet your guide outside of the bakery. The closest metro stations are Saint-Paul (line 1) and Chemin Vert (line 8).
You will meet your guide on rue de Rivoli, the largest roman avenue that separates the North Marais from the South Marais. Village Saint Paul is full of antic shops, art galleries and peaceful streets.
As we walk around Le Marais, you will learn about the fortification wall of the medieval Paris, built in 1190 to protect the city from invadors. We will spot one of the remaining towers of the wall, and observe what the urban planning of Paris has managed to protect.
This charming castle looking building shows a great example of gothic architecture from the 16th century. It is now used as a public library with a large collection of art and design books.
Enjoy a nice stroll along the river Seine, and appreciate the architecture of the Ile Saint Louis and bridges that link the right bank to the islands where the history of Paris all started. You should be able to see the Notre Dame Cathedral from her back.
We will walk passed the beautiful Hotels Particuliers who remained from the aristocrats mansions of the 17th century, when Le Marais was still a country side landscape where vineyards and farms, owned by the monks, were irrigated by the river Seine, giving the neighborhood its name of swamps..
