The Taj displays its different moods through its varied shades. Pinkish in the morning, milky white in the evening, golden when the moon shines and the intermediary variants during different hours of the day and during different seasons in a year. Commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, to house the tomb of his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, the Taj Mahal is an ivory-white marble mausoleum on the south bank of the Yamuna river.
