    Pompeii

Explore this ancient city, perfectly preserved under layers of volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.     Herculaneum, unlike Pompeii, is smaller but remarkably better preserved. While Pompeii was buried under four to five meters of ash, Herculaneum was engulfed by a 20-meter-thick landslide of mud, which protected many of its structures and artifacts. Here, you can marvel at carbonized wooden objects, vibrant paintings, and intricate mosaics that remain intact. With a two-hour guided tour (optional), the city truly comes to life.
