The Igreja de Santa Maria do Olival was built at the orders of the knight Gualdim Pais in the 12th century to serve as the Pantheon for the Order of the Knights Templar. Inside the church are the Gothic tombs of Gualdim Pais, Mestre Lourenço Martins and Mestre Dom Gil Martins.
Conquered from the Moors in 1150, it was made a village in 1571 by letter from D. Sebastião. During the French Invasions it was heavily vandalized. It would later be restored, conserving today many points of rare scenic, architectural and archaeological beauty.
In the middle of the Tagus River, the enigmatic Castelo de Almourol is one of the most emblematic monuments of the Christian Reconquest. When the Christians arrived here in 1129, the castle already existed under the name of Almorolan, having been included in the lands given to the Templars, under the orders of Gualdim Pais. According to an inscription at the entrance, the reconstruction works date back to 1171.
