After a long sleep, on 24 October 79 AD. Vesuvius woke up. This eruption was apocalyptic, as it destroyed the ancient Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
Herculaneum was discovered in the 18th century and became one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world. Today Herculaneum boasts several landmarks such as the house with the mosaic atrium, the house of the Cervo, the Terme del Foro, the house of the mosaic of Neptune, and Amphitrite, which are definitely worth a visit.
Herculaneum is smaller than Pompeii and can be visited in an hour and a half.
