5-days hiking tour to Svaneti is a good combination of outdoor activities with cultural sightseeing. We visit all major destinations in Svaneti and take small hiking trips into the wild nature. A unique blend of mountains scenery and local traditional architecture and traditions creates a majestic fairy-tale for visitors. Svaneti region is probably the most beautiful places in Georgia, and a hike in Svaneti is the vacation of a lifetime. Crowning Georgia’s northern border, Svaneti is a truly majestic place where vivid green alpine meadows nestle against vast forest areas and snow-covered mountains. Here is located one of the highest peaks of Caucasus mountains (Shkhara 5,201 m; Janga 5,059m), medieval-type villages and tower-houses. This tour is for visitors wanting to relax in the wild nature but also not to take long and difficult outdoor activities.
Tbilisi-Enguri Dam: We will meet at your hotel and drive to Svaneti. After 4 hours driving, we stop at Enguri dam which is one of the highest arch dams in the world(a height of 271.5 meters). Then we drive to the region of Upper Svaneti which is an outstanding example of an exceptional mountain landscape composed of highly preserved villages with unique defensive tower houses, examples of ecclesiastical architecture and arts of medieval origin. Visit the Museum of History and ethnography and Svanetian Architectural Museum in Mestia and explore the small town by walking into the narrow streets, visiting small cafes and local souvenirs shops.
After a hearty breakfast at our local guesthouse, we will depart to the Ushguli which is located at the foot of mount Shkara and at the confluence of the rivers Enguri and Kvishiri. The highest permanent settlement in Europe (2200 m) with the outstanding mixture of mountainous landscape and the medieval-type towers and churches will astonish visitors. Here you will visit the Ushguli Ethnographic museum located in the 12th-century old Svanetian tower-house. Wee also visit a medieval Lamaria church ( of the assumption of the Mother of God). Afterward, you can take an optional hike to Shkhara glacier. The way is long (8 km one way) but easy. We just follow upstream of the river Enguri towards Shkhara peak.
We start hiking in the early morning. We hike up towards mount Ushba and reach alpine lakes of Koruldi. Koruldi Lake is a small alpine lake but is surrounded by great impressive mountainous peaks including Ushba. For this day, we can hike to the Koruldi lakes, but if some members from the group have some walking difficulties, we will offer a 4X4 drive to the lakes. Afterward, we hike back to Mestia.
In the morning, we will drive to Mazeri village from Mestia (40 minutes), and start our hiking from Grand Hotel Ushba, crossing the bridge over the river Dolra left from the hotel. The path passes mineral water springs, a small church with the picturesque location, beautiful meadows, and then ascends slowly in the path of beautiful pine forests until it reaches the border post from where the last ascent starts. The trip is 7km long and takes around 3-4 hours one way. Afterward, we travel back to Mestia.
After an energizing breakfast and morning beverages, we travel to the Chalaadi glacier. We will follow upstream of Mestiachala river and after 1,5 km, we reach our finish, a place where the river is born. Afterward, we travel to Tbilisi.
