What’s even better than seeing the Himalayas? Seeing a magnificent sunrise over the high mountains as the rising sun each morning turns the snowcapped peaks to an orangish-red before they become a brilliant, magnificent white! And the best place to see a wonderful sunrise is from the top of Poon Hill in the Annapurna Mountains. 

Poon Hill is famous throughout the world for its magnificent sunrises. The Annapurna Range is one of the most beautiful of all the mountain ranges in the Himalayas. Himalayan Advisor is proud to be able to offer this short trek into the Annapurna’s to see the finest sunrise anywhere in the world. 

This is not a high elevation trek, with the maximum elevation being at Poon Hill (elev. 3221 m/10,568 ft.). It is considered a moderately easy trek. It begins in Pokhara and ends four days later at the spectacular lakeside city where you can enjoy all of the luxuries of Pokhara.

    Day 1

    POKHARA TO GHANDRUK VILLAGE

    Ghandruk

    The journey begins after breakfast as you take a local bus with your guide for two hours to Nayapol (Private car takes just 90 minutes). From the village of Nayapol, the trek begins as you make your way through the semi-tropical forests of the lower Annapurnas. At first, the trek is on level ground, and then we rise in elevation. We are traveling in the ancient home of the Gurung people as we reach the village of Ghandruk. All along the way are awe-inspiring views of Fishtail Mountain, the principle signature landmark of the Annapurnas. Spend the night at a local guesthouse in Ghandruk.

    TREK TO TADAPANI (elev. 2540 m/8,333 ft.)

    We enter dense, dark rhododendron forests that cover the hills in this area. This is the jungles of the Annapurnas, and we can often see monkeys playing in the trees. All along the way are outcroppings where we have closer and closer views of the high peaks of the Annapurnas. These mountains are home to Annapurna I, the 10th highest mountains in the world. Our destination is a small village of Tadapani. Its name means “far water” as it was a source for water for the area villages. It is not a very large village, but we will stay at a very homey guest house for the night.

    TREK TO GHOREPANI (elev. 2775 m/9,104 ft.)

    Our journey will take us out of the jungle and into places of great views of the many peaks of the Annapurnas. Along the way, we stop for pictures of Mt. Dhaulagiri (7th highest mountain in the world), Nilgiri, Tilicho Peak, Himchuli as well as other snowcapped peaks of the Annapurna a Range. Our journey is the village of Ghorepani which means “horse water”. Situated on the ancient salt trails to and from Tibet, this was where travelers would stop to water their horses. Here we stop for the night after traveling around four hours. It’s a larger village and one that people really tend to enjoy its scenic beauty as well as hospitality.

    TREK TO POONHILL AND DRIVE TO POKHARA

    Poon Hill

    We rise early to walk to the top of Poon Hill (elev. 3221 m). We rise well before sunrise in order to catch the very first rays of the effulgent sun. At first, everything is a dark gray on the horizon until the first of the sun’s rays pokes itself above the Himalayas. The red rays begin to turn the snowcapped peaks red as the sun climbs higher and higher in the brilliant blue skies. As it rises, the colors of the peaks change from red to an orange-red and finally turn the most brilliant white you could possibly imagine.
