The church started to be built in 1776 and belonged to the "Confraternity of the Souls of the Holy Body of Massarelos" founded in 1394. The Portuguese Infante D. Henrique (the driver of the Portuguese discoveries) was one of the confreres of this institution.

The Ribeira district spreads alongside the Douro river and used to be a centre of intense commercial and manufacturing activity since the Middle Ages. Also since that time the Ribeira Square was the site of many shops that sold fish, bread, meat and other goods.
It is an urban parish in the city of Gaia. Afurada is located near the mouth of the Douro river, where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. It is a traditional fishing village and was created as such. Its patron saint is Saint Peter, hence the name São Pedro, the equivalent in Portuguese.
The Douro estuary is located in the parish of São Pedro da Afurada, it has an area of 62 hectares, it is a resting, feeding and sheltering place for many species of migratory birds.
The Felgueiras Lighthouse is situated at the edge of the Douro's river mouth and the Atlantic coastline of Foz do Douro.
