This is a short round-trip by car to the amazing Osterfjord area. Our professional driver-guide picks you up at your hotel in Bergen centre (or cruise ship port) and our tour starts. Departure is usually at 9:00am unless otherwise agreed. Leaving Bergen we drive past some of the sights. The Medieval fortress of Bergenhus is one of them.
From Bergen, we will travel to the Osterfjord – a fjord that surrounds one on the largest continental islands in Europe – Osterøy island, 127 square miles (330 km2). Our first stop is at the viewpoint right after crossing the bridge over the fjord.
Returning to mainland, we move on to Dale, where the famous sweater factory is located – “Dale of Norway”. We can visit the factory outlet and maybe pick up some woolen souvenirs there.
From Dale we take one of lesser-known roads going north: steep mountains, narrow fjords and secluded villages along the way. Our next stop is at the Stone Age settlement on the Bolstadfjord: a short walk on a moderately steep trail is required.
Moving on we come to yet another narrow fjord – the Eidsfjord – and make a stop at the magical Hesjedalsfossen waterfall: one of the most iconic sights, and yet an offbeat attraction.
We continue our journey and reach Mo (pronounced “Moo”) – a cosy village between two waterfalls: Geitaskaret and Kvernhusfossen. Here we can have lunch at a small restaurant/café overlooking the Mofjord and Geitaskaret waterfall.
Leaving Mo, we make a short stop at the Kvernhusfossen waterfall before returning to Bergen – an almost non-stop 1.5-hour drive. In the winter, some of the waterfalls and fjords may be frozen.
Our next and last stop on this tour is at the Mostraumen strait - the 600 meters long, very narrow channel connecting two fjords. During the tide there is a strong current here and, of course, an amazing view (regardless of the tide).
On our way back to Bergen we'll continue our ride along the Osterfjord - now to the west of Osterøy island. (Usually we do not stop here.)
Before returning to Bergen we will cross the fjord on the second longest bridge in Norway - the Nordhordlandsbrua - part floating part suspension bridge. (Usually we do not stop here)
