Only about 40 minutes from Tokyo, enjoy a relaxing indigo dyeing experience in a green and quiet area.

Meet your guide at the station and travel together to Ikuta Ryokuchi, a large park full of trees and fresh air. It is a perfect place to slow down and enjoy nature away from the busy city.

Inside the park, visit the Traditional Crafts Center and join a hands-on indigo dyeing workshop. Using natural Japanese indigo, you will dye the item you chose when booking and create your own design.

A local instructor explains each step, and your guide provides English interpretation, making it easy to understand, even for beginners. The workshop lasts about 2 hours.

After the workshop, take your dyed item home as a special souvenir from Japan. You may return to the station with your guide, or explore the nearby Japanese Folk House Open-Air Museum, home to 23 nationally designated historic houses.

This experience lets you enjoy Japanese culture, creativity, and nature, all close to Tokyo.

What to expect

Step into the green space and feel nature around you. This is rich natural scenery just a short train ride from Tokyo. The activity is held at the Traditional Crafts Workshop (Dentou Kougeikan), which is situated in the scenic forest of Ikuta Ryokuchi Park. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about and practice "Aizome," the traditional Japanese art of indigo dyeing. The indigo dyeing workshop itself takes approximately 2 hours. Including the meeting and walking time, the total duration for the experience is approximately 3 hours.
