Your adventure begins in Fátima, one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world. Known as the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima, this sacred place commemorates the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to three shepherd children in 1917. As you walk through the grand esplanade, you will feel the serene and contemplative atmosphere that has inspired millions of pilgrims for over a century. Visit the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, where the tombs of the visionaries rest, and admire the modern Basilica of the Holy Trinity, one of the largest churches in the world. You will also have time to light a candle, reflect in prayer, or simply absorb the peaceful ambiance of this deeply spiritual place.
The next stop is Batalha, a charming town dominated by its majestic Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Portugal. Built to commemorate the Portuguese victory at the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385, the monastery is a masterpiece of stonework and craftsmanship. Inside, discover the Founders’ Chapel, where King João I and Queen Philippa of Lancaster are buried, and the famous unfinished chapels, a symbol of human ambition and artistic vision left incomplete. Take your time to explore the cloisters and admire the intricate Manueline decorations that make this monument a true national treasure.
the Church of Santa Maria de Válega. Located in the small town of Válega, near Ovar, this church is often described as a “canvas of tiles,” with its façade and interior covered in vivid, hand-painted azulejos. The colorful tiles depict biblical scenes and religious motifs, transforming the building into a dazzling mosaic of art and faith. As sunlight reflects off the ceramic surface, the church glows with an almost magical beauty. Inside, the harmony of colors, gold-leaf altars, and ornate wood carvings creates a captivating and deeply spiritual atmosphere.
