Today, you will visit one of Tanzania's northern parks — Mkomazi National Park. Less crowded than other parks, it offers vast landscapes, stunning scenery, and unique wildlife encounters. The name “Mkomazi” means “Water for one spoon,” reflecting the scarcity of water here, so large herds are rare. Visitors come mainly to see black rhinos and the striking African wild dogs up close. Mkomazi hosts one of the world’s top black rhino sanctuaries. Despite their name, black rhinos have gray skin. Poaching once nearly wiped them out, so the population is now carefully protected. You’ll ride in an open vehicle to observe them closely, a rare opportunity in Tanzania. The park also shelters tricolored wild dogs. Around the base, you may spot monkeys, plump hyraxes, squirrels, mongooses, and lizards, making every step a chance for discovery.

Rhino Tracking in Mkomazi National Park

Mkomazi National Park spans over 3,200 sq. km (1,200 sq. mi.), stretching between the Pare Mountains and Kenya’s Tsavo West National Park. Animals freely cross the border, so you may see migrating elephants and, if lucky, lions. Buffaloes, zebras, giraffes, and several antelope species graze the valleys, including the rare gerenuk, or giraffe gazelle, with its long neck. The elephant watering hole is always worth a visit — you never know who will appear. The park is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 400 species. Large birds of prey such as vultures, buzzards, and eagles are easy to spot, while smaller birds like hoopoes and shiny starlings add color to the trees. Guinea fowls often bustle along the roads. Keep your binoculars ready for endless birdwatching opportunities!

You’ve extended your stay in Mkomazi National Park, giving you more chances to encounter its fascinating wildlife. Focus on areas where herbivores gather, such as waterholes and open fields, which often reveal rare events — lions visiting a watering hole or predators hunting young antelopes. Large herds of giraffes are common; watch them rise, recline, engage in neck-wrestling, or gently protect their young from a safe distance with binoculars. Mkomazi is ideal for spotting a variety of antelopes. Alongside impalas, you may see hartebeest, striking oryxes, lesser kudus, large elands, and Grant’s gazelles. Home to around 80 species, the park may challenge you to spot them all, but its quiet, peaceful environment ensures endless surprises for curious visitors.
