Salvador’s food is inseparable from its history, and this tour brings that to life through the streets vendors and neighbourhood eateries. Rather than focusing on restaurants, you’ll experience the city through markets, street stalls, and small local spots, tasting the Afro-Bahian dishes that define its identity.
With 12 plus tastings across multiple stops, the tour is designed as a crash course in the flavours of Bahia from iconic street foods like acarajé to simple grilled snacks and deeper, slow-cooked dishes like ximxim de galinha.
The setting is a key part of the experience. You’ll ride the Elevador Lacerda, move through the cobbled streets of Pelourinho, and explore areas most visitors pass through without understanding.
Led by a knowledgeable local tastemaker guide, this is a relaxed, small-group experience that offers an authentic introduction to Salvador's food scene.
Meet outside the Galeria Mercado Modelo in Comércio district. If looking at the front of the Mercado Modelo market, it is the right hand corner entrance to the building. It is easily accessible by taxi or on foot from most of the city's central hotels.
The tour concludes at the Praça João Alfredo Fontenelle plaza in the old town of Salvador. The tour duration is approximately 3.5 to 4 hours depending on the pace of the group. Your guide can help you to find transport back to your accommodation if you wish.
The Salvador food tour offers guests a culinary experience carefully curated food adventure, led by the team of Salvador tastemakers. Before we get started, the tour reflects the local cuisine, and the limitations of street food vendors and local eateries mean we cannot cater for every dietary restriction. Here's an honest appraisal for the tour, so no-one is disappointed: Unsuitable for vegan, halal diets, lactose intolerance and severe allergies as the number of tastings would be very limited. No pork diets, pescatarian, vegetarian, gluten intolerance, lactose intolerance, mild tree nut / peanut allergies and no seafood diets are possible though some tastings do not have alternatives available and the menu would be more limited.
Explore Salvador’s food scene on a 4-hour food tour through Mercado Modelo, Pelourinho, and Santo Antônio, with 12 plus tastings along the way. Begin at the market before riding the iconic Elevador Lacerda into the historic centre, where street vendors and local kitchens shape the city’s evening food culture. You’ll start with sweet and comforting bites like Bahian cassava doughnuts and coconut candy, before moving into savoury favourites such as tapioca flatbreads, acarajé filled with vatapá, grilled queijo coalho, cod fritters, and coxinha. Along the way, enjoy fresh coconut and lime juice, sugarcane juice, and a small glass of cravinho. The experience finishes with a Bahian spread of ximxim de galinha, caruru, and fried plantain. This isn’t about fine dining, it’s an authentic taste of the real Bahia curated and led by local tastemaker guides.
The tour concludes after 3.5-4 hours. You'll leave not only full, but with a much deeper understanding of Salvador’s food culture and the confidence to continue eating your way through Brazil.
