A small-group day tour from Ljubljana to the UNESCO-listed Škocjan Caves and the Venetian coastal town of Piran, with a licensed local guide and no more than 8 guests.
In a country with thousands of caves, Škocjan is the one we take our visiting friends to. You walk through an underground canyon carved by the Reka river, across a footbridge set almost 50 metres above the water, through halls large enough to hold a cathedral. It is UNESCO-listed, and far quieter than Slovenia's busier show caves, which is exactly why we chose it for this route.
On the way to the coast, you stop at Socerb Castle, perched on the edge of the Karst plateau with the whole Gulf of Trieste below. Then Piran, five centuries of Venice in one compact old town: narrow lanes, Tartini Square, the little harbour, time for a seafood lunch by the water, and in the summer months, enough free time for a swim in the Adriatic. Your guide knows which konoba is worth your hour.

Your day starts with pickup in central Ljubljana. On the roughly 1-hour drive, your guide introduces the Karst, the limestone region that gave its name to karst landscapes worldwide, and the cave you are about to walk through. Then a 2-hour guided tour of the Škocjan Caves: an underground canyon carved by the Reka river, a footbridge set almost 50 metres above the water, halls large enough to hold a cathedral. UNESCO-listed, and far quieter than Slovenia's busier show caves.
On the way to the coast you stop at Socerb Castle, perched on the edge of the Karst plateau. From the castle the whole Gulf of Trieste opens below you, the Slovenian coast and Italy in a single view. A short stop, time for photos and the view.
Then Piran, five centuries of Venice in one compact old town: narrow lanes, Tartini Square, the little harbour. Your guide walks you through the historic centre, then the time is yours, a seafood lunch by the water, a coffee on the square, and in the summer months a swim in the Adriatic. Your guide knows which konoba is worth your hour. After the free time, a relaxed drive back to Ljubljana with a drop-off in the centre.
