Bhutan tour with Bumthang Extension gives the full insight of the Bhutanese art & architecture, culture and traditions and discovers the hidden natural beauty of the country located high up in the Himalayas. The tour goes around visiting the important touristic landmarks and also witnessing the snow-capped mountains of the Dragon Kingdom. Explore the stunning and wide valley of Bumthang; Bumthang has four main valleys known as Ura, Chumey, Tang and Choekhor. You get to experience the Bhutanese rural live-styles in Bumthang Valley and visit some of it’s great monasteries like Kurje Lakhang, Jambey Lakhang and Tamshing Lakhang.

What to expect

Day 01: Arrive Paro & transfer to Thimphu

Arrive in Paro and meet our representative. Take a break for lunch and then carry out sightseeing program at Paro visiting the famous places like Rinpung Dzong and Ta Dzong. Later drive towards Thimphu.

Day 02: Thimphu to Punakha

Early in the morning after breakfast, sightseeing around Thimphu and drive towards the Punakha crossing the famous Dochula Pass (3050m) which provides the spectacular view of majestic mountains. On way also pay visit to Chimmi Lhakhang.

Day 03: Punakha to Gangtey 

Today drive to Gangtey via Wangdue. After Wangdue is a drive up a winding mountain road through oak and rhododendron forest, and over a high pass down into the Phobjikha valley, surely one of the loveliest high altitude valleys in Bhutan. Phobjikha is one of Bhutan’s few glacial valleys, and chosen winter home of black-necked cranes, migrating from the Tibetan plateau.

Day 04: Gangtey - Bumthang

Today, we drive 5 hours to Bumthang valley. The road climbs rapidly through a series of hairpins out of Trongsa and there are great views back to the Dzong and out across the valley. After passing through cultivated fields for a while, the trail re-enters the forest and reach the Yotong La (3400m). Descending to a low point of 2650m at a village called Chumey; the scenery is once again totally different as the route enters the wide-open Bumthang valleys. It takes about an hour to get to the roadside at Chumey, the first of the four valleys in Bumthang. 

Day 06: In Bumthang - Sightseeing

After breakfast visit Jambay Lhakang along with Kurjey Lhakang. Later cross the suspension bridge and visit the Tamshing Lhakang. Afterwards, visit Swiss farm along with homeopathic hospital, the cheese factory and the castle of "White Bird".

Day 06: Bumthang – Gangtey 

After breakfast, re-trace the same route back towards Gangtey and the road journey today is bit longer with 8 hours of drive. Upon arrival at Gangtey, check-in hotel. 

Day 07: Gangtey - Paro 

After breakfast, drive back to Paro cross Dochula pass which is about 5 hours drive. PM: Stroll around the streets of Paro. 

Day 08: In Paro -  Hike to Taktsang Monastery 'Tiger's Nest'

After breakfast drive towards the base camp of Taktsang for the hike up to the Taktsang Monastery-Tiger's Nest which takes about two hours. The Monastery offers the spectacular view of Paro valley. While returning back visit the Kyichu Lhakhang.

Day 09: Departure

After breakfast, transfer to the airport to catch the onward flight. Bid farewell to the remote and legendary Dragon Kingdom disappearing again behind its guardian mountains.
