Évora holds three ages inside one walled city: a stone circle raised some 2,000 years before Stonehenge, one of Iberia's best preserved Roman temples, and a UNESCO listed medieval centre. The catch: the best of it sits outside the walls, on a rutted dirt track with no public transport. This private tour solves the access and the context.
Start at the Almendres Cromlech, 95 standing stones among cork oaks. In Évora, step inside the Chapel of Bones, lined with around 5,000 skulls, then see the Roman Temple, built for the cult of Augustus, not Diana, with 14 of its 18 columns still standing. Walk from Giraldo Square to the marble cathedral, with time for lunch on your own.
