Commissioned by King Manuel I, the tower was built from 1515 to 1521 to be a fortress in the middle of the Tagus. The starting point for the Discoveries' navigators, this Manueline jewel became the symbol of Portuguese expansion.
Perched high on the riverbank in Belém, this massive monument was built in 1960 to mark the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator.
This coach collection is probably the best in Europe. Made in Portugal, Italy, France, Austria and Spain, the coaches cover three centuries and range from the simplest to the most sophisticated.
A fascinating neighbourhood at any time of the day but which comes alive in the early evening when the inhabitants take to the streets and the taverns start to fill up.
