    Silves

Silves, the former Moorish capital of the Algarve (then known as Xelb), is one of Portugal's most historically significant and atmospheric towns. Situated on the banks of the Arade River and surrounded by orange groves, it offers a stark contrast to the coastal resort towns, with its winding cobblestone streets, red sandstone monuments, and deep medieval roots.

The Cathedral of Silves is recognized as the most important Gothic building in the Algarve, built on the site of a former Grand Mosque. Notable for its fortress-like exterior and beautiful Manueline high altar. Houses the tombs of several bishops and crusaders who participated in the Reconquista. Located directly opposite the equally charming Igreja da Misericórdia.

is a "must-visit" for history buffs, as it is built around an incredibly well-preserved 11th-century Moorish well. Exhibits range from Paleolithic findings to artifacts from the Muslim period. The museum's architecture seamlessly integrates the ancient well into its modern structure.

History and Significance Built in the 16th century, the chapel is an annex to the Parish Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceicao. It was created during a time when local cemeteries were overflowing. Rather than simply disposing of the remains, the bones were exhumed and used to decorate the interior of this small prayer space. It serves as a "Memento Mori"—a physical reminder of the transience of life. The message is simple: No matter your status in life, we all end up the same.

Capela da Nossa Senhora da Rocha

The Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Rocha (Our Lady of the Rock) is one of the most iconic and photographed landmarks in the Algarve. Perched on a narrow, dramatic cliff that juts out into the Atlantic in Porches, this whitewashed chapel is a symbol of spiritual protection and coastal beauty. The current Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Rocha dates back to the 16th century, but the site itself has been sacred for much longer. Evidence suggests it was a place of worship for Visigoths and later Muslims before the Christian reconquest. Some of the interior columns actually date back to the 3rd or 4th century. The chapel was originally enclosed within the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Rocha, a military defense built to protect the coast from North African pirates. While the 1755 earthquake destroyed most of the fort, the chapel miraculously survived. For centuries, it has been a sanctuary for local fishermen. According to legend, the Virgin Mary appeared on this rock to help sailors in distress.
