The Forbidden City, formerly known as the Purple Forbidden City, is located at the center of Beijing's central axis. It was the imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties in China. The architectural layout of the Forbidden City is strict and it is divided into the Outer court and the inner court. The Outer court, centered around the three main halls of the Hall of Supreme Harmony, the Hall of Central Harmony and the Hall of Preserving Harmony, was the place where the emperor held major ceremonies and handled state affairs. The inner court, centered around the Ganqing Palace, the Jiaotai Hall and the Kunning Palace, was the main residence of the emperor and empress, followed by the imperial garden.
