It is at the top of the list for first time visitors to Bangkok. If there is one must-see sight that no visit to Bangkok would be complete without. It is the dazzling, spectacular Palace, undoubtedly the city's most famous landmark. The Grand Palace which has been the official residence of the Kings of Thailand since 1782. Rather than being a single structure, this place is made up of numerous buildings, halls and pavilions set around open lawns, gardens and courtyards, with additions and rebuilding being undertaken by successive reigning kings over the past 200 years.
This temple complex houses the largest collection of Buddha images in Thailand, including 46 meters in length and 14 meters in height Reclining Buddha with beautiful mother of pearl inlay. It is also considered the earliest centre for public education in Thailand, and the marble illustrations and inscriptions placed in the temple for public instructions has been recognized by UNESCO in its Memory of the World Programme. It houses a school of Thai medicine, and is also known as the birthplace of traditional Thai massage which is still taught and practiced at the temple.
It is partly made up of colorfully decorated spires(prang) with tiny pieces of colored glass and Chinese porcelain placed delicately into intricate patterns and stands majestically over the river.
