It is best known because of its eruption in 79 A.D. which destroyed the cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae. The volcano is just 6 miles from the modern city of Naples and is a popular visitor attraction with a lot of visitors every year.
From the rim of this beautiful giant volcano, enjoy the breathtaking views across the Gulf of Naples with Capri, Ischia, and Sorrento in the distance. On your descent to Pompeii train station, catch the regular train back in the direction of Sorrento.
