What to expect

This is a unique opportunity to visit the home of a local and explore traditional culture and cuisine. Meet your warm and friendly host Kylie at her small and cozy apartment in East Harlem. Share a fresh homemade juice like passion fruit or starfruit as your host shares stories about life in the city and your menu for the day. Join Kylie in her small kitchen to learn to cook a fusion of Soul, Tamil and Caribbean cuisine from recipes that have been passed down through generations in her and her husband’s families. Based on your preference, Kylie can offer a hands-on cooking class or demo that will last 2 hours. You will learn to cook or watch your host prepare 3 dishes from scratch. Enjoy learning about the techniques involved in cooking Soul, Caribbean and South Indian food before you sit down at the table to share the meal you helped prepare with Kylie. On days that her husband Madhav is available, he will join you at the table. Your menu may include an appetizer like tostones or fried plantains, fried rice flour dumplings with a fresh chutney and a main such as prawn curry served with dosai, rice and peas, and a side of avocado. And finally for dessert, Kylie may serve payasam.
