The day will begin with a short scenic drive along the coast to Trogir, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded by Greek colonists in the 3rd century BC, Trogir boasts more than 2,300 years of continuous urban history. Its beautiful Romanesque churches are complemented by impressive Renaissance and Baroque buildings dating from the Venetian period.
Admire the exterior of the Cathedral of St. Lawrence, a three-naved Roman Catholic basilica built in the Romanesque-Gothic style in Trogir, Croatia. As its construction spanned several centuries, the cathedral reflects the succession of architectural styles that developed throughout Dalmatia. Today, it stands as one of Trogir’s most impressive monuments.
Marvel the City Loggia, a 13th-century open-sided structure located in Trogir’s main square, Trg Ivana Pavla II. Originally serving as a public gathering place, it was used as a courtroom, marketplace, and venue for official announcements. Its elegant architecture features Renaissance elements, with graceful arches supported by slender columns.
Admire the exterior of Kamerlengo Castle, built in the mid-15th century by Marin Radoj as an extension of the earlier Veriga Tower, which had stood on the site since the late 14th century. Today, the castle provides an atmospheric setting for performances during the summer months. The name “Kamerlengo” derives from the Italian word for a chamberlain or administrative official.
Enjoy some free time in Trogir’s lively central square, where you can soak up the historic atmosphere, admire the elegant surrounding architecture, browse local shops, or relax at a café with a refreshing drink. After this pleasant break, we will reunite with the group and continue our scenic drive to Split for the next part of the tour.
Marvel at the majesty of Diocletian’s Palace, an ancient imperial residence built for the Roman emperor Diocletian around the turn of the 4th century AD. Today, this remarkable complex forms approximately half of Split’s historic Old Town and vibrant city center, where ancient walls, lively streets, shops, cafés, and everyday local life blend seamlessly together.
Admire the Cathedral of St. Domnius, an extraordinary complex formed from the former mausoleum of the Roman emperor Diocletian and its striking bell tower. The church itself is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, while the bell tower is dedicated to Saint Domnius. Together, they form one of Split’s most important historic and architectural landmarks.
Stroll through People’s Square, or Narodni Trg, a lively and attractive piazza located just outside the Iron Gate on the western side of Diocletian’s Palace. Surrounded by elegant stone buildings, the square is filled with inviting restaurants, cafés, and bars, making it a wonderful place to experience the vibrant atmosphere of Split.
Explore Split’s Golden Gate, known as Porta Aurea, one of the four original entrances to Diocletian’s Palace. Constructed in the 4th century, this impressive gateway once served as the emperor’s grand northern entrance and remains one of the palace complex’s most remarkable surviving features.
Marvel at Prokurative, an elegant 19th-century square developed under the influence of General Marmont and initiated by Split’s celebrated mayor, Antonio Bajamonti. Its architecture was strongly inspired by Italian design and closely resembles St. Mark’s Square in Venice. The Venetian architect behind the project is said to have created the square as a reminder of his beloved hometown, giving Prokurative its distinctive Mediterranean charm.
