The Castle of Nipozzano is one of the historic estates of the Marchesi de' Frescobaldi, a family with over 700 years of winemaking tradition. Built around the year 1000 as a fortress, it now lies at the heart of Chianti Rufina DOCG wine production. Nearby, the Pomino area offers a different expression of Tuscan wine. Nestled in the hills at elevations up to 700 meters, Pomino’s cooler climate produces fresher, more aromatic, and lighter-bodied wines. Pomino was part of the world’s first official wine region classification in 1716, commissioned by the Grand Duke of Tuscany—predating both the French AOC and Italian DOC systems. In the 19th century, the Frescobaldi family pioneered the use of international grape varieties such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Merlot here, drawing inspiration from French techniques.
