The Cathedral of Santa María rises majestically in the old part of Vitoria-Gasteiz. It was built in the late 13th century and all throughout the 14th century. Of Gothic style, it was conceived as a church-fortress, with great volume and enclosed appearance, being part of the city's defences. Between 1496 and 1861, the building operated as a collegiate church and it was that year when it was declared cathedral. It has a Latin cross plan, with a wide transcept crossing and circular apse containing several chapels.

The names of its streets recall the artisan traders who used to work and live there (Correría, Herrería, Zapatería, Cuchillería, Pintorería...) and host the oldest and most singular buildings in the city. Behind the cathedral, for instance, visitors will be able to admire the Portalón, a nice medieval brick inn, and the tower of Anda. In the heart of the old medieval quarter, two magnificent Reinassance palaces stand out: the Escoriza-Esquivel palace and the Montehermoso palace, the latter now refurbished into a cultural centre.

Ken Follett's statue is located in front of the Cathedral of Santa María in Vitoria-Gasteiz, where he was inspired to write the second part of The Pillars of the Earth, A World Without End. It is the work of the sculptor Casto Solano, is made of bronze and represents the Welsh author in the typical reflexive pose that one puts when they say: "now play the intellectual", that is, the hand under the chin. In addition, it is life-size.
