The original church of Sant Jaume was built in Gothic style by order of King Jaume II in the 14th century, but in 1870 it collapsed almost entirely, leaving only the Chapel of Santo Cristo standing. It would be some years before the church was rebuilt again, the work began in 1882, the architect Joaquín de Pavia designed the church in Gothic style following the historicist criteria that marked the time but the work was not completed until 1983.
