It was built from 1492 to 1500 by order of King Ferdinand I of Aragon with designs attributed to Leonardo da Vinci. It has been occupied ever since by the Spanish royal family. The castle is at the top of the hill that rises from the southwest edge of the city. It is situated over a natural rock formation and has been strengthened with three round towers.
