This tour is ideal for those not bothered by longer drives in order to gain another perspective on temple touring. It's essential to leave Siem Reap early in the morning as getting to Sambor Prei Kuk takes approximately two and half hours. Consisting of dozens of impressive brick prasats in semi-cleared jungle, many ruins display excellent examples of early Khmer art. This pre-Angkorian complex is an important destination for the serious temple visitor. You will pause briefly at the Kampong Kdei Bridge. We also visit the stilted community of Kompong Khleang located on the northern edge of the Tonle Sap lake approximately 55km east of Siem Reap town. When the monsoon comes the waters rise up to one or two meters of the buildings. This is a permanent community with subsistence fishing as the main source of livelihood. This is also one of the largest communities on the Tonle Sap lake.

    Sambor Prei Kuk

After breakfast at hotel, we leave Siem Reap for Sambor Prei Kuk, the old city of Chenla. In the early 7th century, Sambor Prei Kuk was the capital of the Kingdom of Chenla, a pre-Angkorian Khmer kingdom that was known in Chinese chronicles as “Zhēnlà.” Constructed by King Isanavarman I, the complex was an important religious center devoted to the worship of Shiva. Boasting more than 100 temples, mostly made of brick, the temple ruins are located in three main groups, scattered across the semi-cleared jungle. Explore the serene temples, including the Prasat Yeay Peau, atmospherically smothered by ancient trees, and the extravagant lion carvings of the Prasat Tao.

    Kompong Khleang

After that, we stop over the stilted community of Kompong Khleang located on the northern edge of the Tonle Sap lake approximately 55km east of Siem Reap town. Accessible in both dry and wet season, visitors to Kompong Khleang during the dry season are universally awestruck by the forest of stilted houses rising up to 10 meters in the air. When the monsoon comes the waters rise up to one or two meters of the buildings. This is a permanent community with subsistence fishing as the main source of livelihood. This is also one of the largest communities on the Tonle Sap lake. Back to Siem Reap and drop off at hotel.
