Mare aux Vacoas is the largest freshwater reservoir in Mauritius, located in the highlands of the Plaines Wilhems district, near Curepipe. Built in 1885 and later expanded, the reservoir plays a vital role in supplying water to a large part of the island. Surrounded by dense forests and cool misty air, Mare aux Vacoas lies at an elevation of about 600 meters above sea level, giving it a tranquil, almost mysterious atmosphere. The area is rich in native vegetation and is also close to other natural attractions such as Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao) and the Black River Gorges National Park. Due to its altitude, the region often experiences cooler temperatures and frequent rainfall, which helps replenish the reservoir. While primarily serving as an essential water source, Mare aux Vacoas is also admired for its peaceful landscape, making it a popular stop for nature lovers, photographers, and those seeking a quiet retreat amidst Mauritius’ lush greenery.

Also known as Ganga Talao, Grand Bassin is a lake situated 6km SouthEast of Mare aux Vacoas in a secluded mountain area in the district of Savanne, deep in the heart of Mauritius. It is about 1800 feet (550m) above sea level. Grand Bassin with its Hindu temple is a holy lake for Mauritians of the Hindu faith. The lake rests in the crater of an extinct volcano. It is said that the water inside the lake communicates with the waters of the holy Ganges of India. The Hindus of Mauritius declared the Grand Bassin as a Holy lake. The Hindu community performs a pilgrimage every year on the Maha Shivaratri (Shiva’s Great Night), on this day they honour the Lord Shiva. Beside the lake, there is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and other Gods including Hanuman, Lakshmi, and others.
